Front AND Rear Derailleur Rust Removal – Service
Oman’s weather elements can get even the most expensive bike components to rust very quickly. In some cases, it is imperative that you get the rust removed as soon as possible before it damages other components. In the case of derailleurs, the majority are made of high-class derailleurs are made with a mix of aluminium or magnesium and steel, except for a few plastic parts. The less expensive derailleurs are mainly made of steel (except for a few plastic parts). For the derailleur to give you a long life of dependable service, the springs must be without rust (that is why the factory applies green/blue grease). The original protective grease melts or is gone within 3 months of use in Oman. Requiring frequent regreasing to keep the springs from rusting. If the body is made of iron/steel, that too gets rusted in no time. Therefore, removing rust and keeping the derailleur parts rust-free will enhance the life of derailleurs here in Oman.
We use both chemicals and mechanical/manual methods to remove rust. Unfortunately, we cannot “beef up” areas that rust has already eaten (oxidised), nor can we shine materials that were previously matt finish or chrome, but rust has eaten through the chrome plating
