Gear Shifter/STI Shifter – Service
Do you find your Shifter simply sliding and there’s no action on the derailleurs?
You just might need your Shifters serviced.
The Gear Shifter/STI Shifter service is part of long term maintenance items. In Oman it is almost random, depending on several factors such as;
- Is the Shifter serviceable
- Does the Shifter have replaceable parts
- Where the rider rides (riding conditions, elements exposure)
- Where the bike is parked (elements it is exposed to)
- When and how the shifter was serviced (if serviced before, what lubrication was used)
Unfortunately most Shifters in the market today (except for Campagnolo) are not designed to be serviced. They are more like use and throw items.
However, we have found ways to service these shifters successfully. This service can be very complicated in some instances where we have to open components one by one. In some cases, it is actually a matter of “fixing and repairing”, and some cases are actually “service”.
We have serviced a larger percentage (over 85%) of Shifters for which the users have not returned. However for about 15% of Shifters, we were not able to give them a long life, or they have had to be serviced again because of over exposure to certain elements.
The success rate (which equals to how long the Shifter works before it has to be serviced again or replaced) depends on a couple of factors such as;
- How long has the problem existed (if caught early, then you can expect longer life and usage)
- How persistent are the elements that cause the issue where the rider lives or ride
